Description
Blackhaw provides yearlong interest from sprays of blooms to red fall leaves to blue-black berries that persist in winter and are important for wildlife. Blackhaw are larval host to about 100 species of US caterpillars, including Spring/Summer Azures and the Baltimore Checkerspot. Wrens, Orioles, Vireos, Nuthatches and others love the insects and berries. While some Viburnum have been hit hard by a non-native beetle, Blackhaw seem to survive the beetle. Drought-tolerant, Blackhaws are a good alternative to non-native invasive honeysuckles that invade its woodland habitat.
